EVENTS
Best events of the week
Pinocchio, olive trees and French film this week in Florence, gearing up towards Halloween horror and hilarity on October 31.
HALLOWEEN
Where to celebrate Halloween in Florence
Costume planned, spider webs stretched across door frames and pumpkin carving kit ready for action? Whatever your levels of Halloween organisation, we have you covered with where to celebrate the scare fest.
Downton Abbey Night: alternative Halloween
Get your tickets for the Downton Abbey movie night at Cinema Odeon Firenze on October 31. Period costumes encouraged!

Firenze dall'alto was a series of sunset events held for the first time this summer on Florence's little-seen rooftops. The places selected for this first edition included the rooftop of the Ex-Dogane di Rifredi, the walkway of the Torre di Arnolfo at Palazzo Vecchio, The Student Hotel, Terrazza del Verone/Museo degli Innocenti, Forte Belvedere and the rooftop of Manifattura Tabacchi.
INSPIRING WOMEN
The most feminine of cities
by Charlotte Hughes-Morgan
In both language and literature, cities are typically seen as female entities, and Florence is no exception to this rule. Is it time that we questioned the concept of Florence as a feminine city?
Suso Cecchi d'Amico
by Deirdre Pirro
Suso Cecchi d'Amico, the "Queen of Cinecittà", was awarded the Golden Lion for her lifetime achievement at the Venice International Film Festival in 1994 for having left her indelible mark on over 100 films in the post-World War II period.

Facing Fallaci
by Mary Gray
Yes, this proposal seemed great, I said, but living in Florence, and pursuing my line of work, and having just read and written about Oriana Fallaci as journalist/critic/town crier, I'd like to backtrack and read her novels, and what I mean is I'd prefer to present on la Fallaci, please.
EXPLORING TUSCANY
Sound of silence: my book based on Barga
by Karen Campbell
This is how I approached The Sound of the Hours. Months of research unlocked a history I knew nothing about: how Italy had fought alongside Germany, then come out of WW2, with the king arresting Mussolini; how Mussolini was freed by the Germans, and reinstated in a "Republic" in the north, so Italy was literally split in two.
ARTISAN
Learn leather making
Bespoke shoemaker Stefano Bemer and leather accessories producer Scuola del Cuoio are dedicated to helping the next generation of artisans learn skills and focus on quality. From 2020, they will be combining their course offerings, giving life to a new hub for modern artisans. Applications are now open for programs in either shoemaking or leather accessories-making.
