November issue of The Florentine – out today!

Mental health among children is at the core of this month's cover as top thinkers from all over the world gather in Florence to discuss this crucial issue affecting young people: research has shown that up to 20 percent of adolescents are experiencing mental health disorders. From November 7 to 9, 70-plus speakers are expected to attend the first global Leading Minds conference organized by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

I hope our international visitors find a few hours to boost their own brain health by enjoying Florence's diverse arts and culture. The European Commission's Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor has just rated the city top for its creativity and cultural vibrancy, so I spoke with Tommaso Sacchi, city councillor for culture, fashion and design, to find out what's next.

For one sublime sight, stand in awe before the Last Supper by nun-artist Plautilla Nelli in the Santa Maria Novella museum. The 21-foot painting was recently restored by the Advancing Women Artists Foundation thanks to worldwide donors and #TheFirstLast crowdfunding campaign run by TF's sister communication company, Flod. Read AWA director Linda Falcone's inspiring words.

On November 13, from 10am to noon, pop to our regular Breakfast Drop-In with The Florentine at Godi Fiorenza (via Cavour 26-28R), while on November 18, I'll be talking about the contemporary challenges of magazine editing at The British Institute of Florence (6pm, lungarno Guicciardini 9, Florence; minimum donation 5 euro) during Lungarno Chats. Don't forget tonight's showing of Downton Abbey at Cinema Odeon Firenze. Period costumes encouraged; starts at 9pm. (If you can't make it tonight, this much-awaited film based on the popular TV series will be on the Odeon until November 6.)

EVENTS
Best events this month
From film festivals to tattoos, Pinocchio and Magritte, it's all about culture this month in Florence. Plus, it's time to start thinking about the festive season as the Christmas market returns to piazza Santa Croce on November 30.
CULTURE
Begin again
by Linda Falcone

Helen Farrell, TF's editor-in-chief, invited me to write an article "to offer insight" on how I feel about concluding a restoration that has meant so much to so many across the world. My insight, if you are kind enough to call it that, can be compressed into a single question: What will the museum staff do with so many roses?
The father and son who left their mark
by Martin Holman

Until November 10, the exhibition at Palazzo Antinori shows the change the Macchiaioli artists brought about by comparing a father and his son, Giovanni and Telemaco Signorini. Both painters, they nevertheless flourished in contrasting eras, for art and for Italy.
FOOD AND WINE
Ruffino opens a restaurant inspired by Leonardo
Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, Le Tre Rane – Ruffino on the scenic Poggio Casciano estate is a restaurant that is fast becoming the place to savour Sunday lunch and weekday dinners in the Chianti countryside.
