It's time to do something meaningful

Many of us move to Florence in search of meaning. We find it in art (making or viewing), architecture, or perhaps religion. Often, it is found in simple gestures as we start to integrate and feel a sense of belonging.

One of my resolutions for 2020 is to pledge some of my time to charity work. I remember the friendly face of the hospital volunteer who shared a laugh with me on the ward at Ponte a Niccheri, my tennis buddy's smile as she organized a raffle for children in Namibia, and the meaningful feeling of solidarity at the various Christmas markets that take place all over the city. So, this week's newsletter focuses on charities and giving back to Florence as we celebrate the holiday season.

Here's wishing you and yours a meaningful Christmas.

CHARITY
Problem of the soup
by Marcie Shlesinger Beyatte
When my friend Cristina asked me to take care of her father, Antonio, the request came at the perfect moment. I wanted an excuse to extend my time in Italy. "All you have to do is make him dinner and sleep here at night." Cristina made it seem so simple.
A ride with Zia Caterina
by Rea Stavropoulos
It was only later that I found out more about Zia Caterina and what she does and why. Following her partner's death, she made it her mission to help Florence's children and their families in a heartwarming way.

LEARN
Teachers are the real influencers
The Europass Teacher Academy, a center in Florence for professional development in education, has begun researching and developing the concept of the "teacher-leader", both in theory and in practice.
EATING
The Yule log
by Deirdre Pirro
The origins of the Yule log stretch back to pagan times, but in the beginning instead of a cake it was the real thing, a huge log of wood that burned in family hearths to mark the winter solstice throughout Europe, but particularly in Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy.
Ducking and dining at Cooking in Florence
by Helen Farrell
It was Friday night and the lights were low as we crossed the double-door threshold into the mellow L'Ideale – Cooking in Florence events space. Chef Gianluca Somigli beckons me into his kitchen as he respectfully unpacks Muscovy ducks.
