Happy New Decade: Nonstop Florence!

Round-number years come hand-tied with innate significance, personally even more so as a 1980 baby and a 2010 bride. Another decade, another endeavour. We stretch into the New Year with an inspirational 24-hour timelapse cover patiently captured by Gian Lorenzo Ferretti, which is accompanied by our day-long tips for exploring Florence (turn over a new leaf, to the back page).

This first TF in 2020 brings you a preview of the next 12 months, from a plastic-free drive to the 600th anniversary of Brunelleschi's Dome and quincentenary events marking the death of Raphael. We think transportation as Harry Cochrane considers the city's other stations, Alexandra Korey looks into the car-sharing situation, and Eibhlin Priestley and Shauna Kavanagh talk about the perils and pleasures of cycling. Literary matters are on our mind as Jane Farrell explores Oscar Wilde's words about Florence and I wax lyrical about the Gabinetto Vieusseux during the cultural centre's 200th anniversary celebrations.

New features for 2020 include Vincenzo D'Angelo's monthly LGBTQIA+ column and the reintroduced Letters to the Editor page for your queries and comments, so please get in touch: redazione@theflorentine.net.

Happy New Decade!

INTO 2020

Best events this month
The festive season in Florence is finally upon us. The city lights up in December with a packed line-up of events.
Good intentions
If it's in print, it has to happen. That's our goal as TF's staff reveal their plans and aspirations for 2020.
LEARN
Florida State University to move
This summer, Florida State University will move its base to the Palazzo Bagnesi Falconeri, a 37,000-square-foot palace in via de' Neri that dates to the time of Michelangelo.
LdM gains a new hub

The Lorenzo de' Medici Institute and the film company Fair Play have won the public tender to occupy one and a half floors of the former San Firenze courthouse.
Pitti Uomo 97: In Pictures
Pitti Uomo is back in town. Highlights includes the opening of Polimoda's new HQ at Manifattura Tabacchi, the Fiskars by Maria Korkeila capsule collection at Palazzo Pucci, the 75th anniversary of Brioni and Karl Lagerfeld's return with the A Tribute to Karl: The White Shirt Project exhibition.
GETTING AROUND
Car2Gone
by Alexandra Korey

That's 300 fewer Smart cars on the streets of Florence: Share Now, the company that recently absorbed Car2Go, announced that as of February 29, 2020, it will no longer be providing free-flowing car sharing services in the Tuscan capital.
Florence's other stations
by Harry Cochrane

Say "Florence train station" and you mean Santa Maria Novella. On behalf of those who would like to do their railwayfaring from somewhere a little off the beaten track, I struck out in search of platforms new.
